Traditional & Roth IRA Accounts

When it comes to securing your financial future, having a solid plan for retirement is essential. At Greater Iowa Credit Union, we offer a variety of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) to help you build wealth for retirement or other future expenses. Whether you're just starting your retirement savings journey or looking to optimize your existing portfolio, our IRAs can help you achieve your long-term goals.

Why Choose an ira?

An Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is one of the most powerful tools you can use to save for your future. With an IRA, you can enjoy tax advantages that can help you grow your savings over time, making it an ideal choice for long-term financial planning. Below are some reasons why an IRA is a smart choice

  • Tax Benefit: IRAs offer tax-deferred growth (Traditional IRA) or tax-free withdrawals (Roth IRA), helping you maximize your savings
  • Security for the Future: IRAs are a critical component of a retirement savings plan, ensuring you have the funds needed for a comfortable retirement.
  • Flexible Contributions: IRAs provide flexible contribution options, allowing you to save at your own pace while benefiting from compounded growth.

Traditonal IRA

A Traditional IRA is perfect for individuals who want to benefit from tax-deferred growth. Your contributions may be tax-deductible, reducing your taxable income for the year in which you contribute. Additionally, earnings in the account grow tax-deferred until you begin withdrawing them in retirement.

Key Features:

  • Immediate tax deductions
  • Tax-deferred growth

Roth IRA

A Roth IRA allows you to enjoy tax-free growth and tax-free withdrawals in retirement. Contributions to a Roth IRA are made with after-tax dollars, meaning you won't receive a tax deduction upfront. However, the real advantage is that your withdrawals in retirement are completely tax-free, making it ideal for long-term growth.

Key Features:

  • Tax-free growth
  • Tax-free withdrawals
  • No required minimum distributions (RMDs)

Traditional & Roth IRA FAQs

  • What is an IRA account?

An IRA account is a tax-advantaged savings account that helps you save for retirement or other long-term goals. GICU offers Individual Retirement Accounts designed to support retirement planning, education savings, and future expenses. Depending on the type of IRA you choose, your account may offer tax-deferred growth or tax-free withdrawals, giving you a flexible way to build savings over time.

  • What’s the difference between a Traditional and a Roth IRA?

The main difference is how each IRA handles taxes. With a Traditional IRA, your contributions may be tax-deductible, and your earnings grow tax-deferred until you begin taking withdrawals in retirement. With a Roth IRA, contributions are made with after-tax dollars, but qualified withdrawals in retirement can be tax-free. GICU offers both options so members can choose the account that better fits their long-term savings strategy.

  • Which IRA is right for me — Traditional or Roth?

The right IRA depends on your current tax situation, future retirement plans, and when you want the tax benefit. A Traditional IRA may be a good fit if you want possible tax deductions now and tax-deferred growth over time. A Roth IRA may be better if you prefer tax-free qualified withdrawals later. Our team can help you compare both options based on your retirement or education savings goals.

  • What’s the minimum to open an IRA?

The minimum to open depends on the type of IRA account you choose. Our High Yield Roth IRA and Traditional IRA Savings accounts have a $0 minimum balance to open. IRA Special Share Certificates and Standard IRA Share Certificates require a $1,000 minimum balance to open. This gives members flexibility to start with savings or choose a certificate option when they are ready.

  • Can I roll over a 401(k) or an IRA from another institution?

You may be able to move funds from another retirement account into an IRA, but the right process depends on the account type, the institution, and IRS rules. If you have a 401(k) from a former employer or an IRA elsewhere, we can help you review your options and understand whether a Traditional IRA or Roth IRA may fit your next step.
