  • What is a money market account?

A money market account gives you a way to earn higher dividends while still keeping your savings accessible. Our Money Market account is designed for members who want more earning potential than a standard savings account without committing their money to a fixed term like a certificate. It can be a useful option for emergency savings, larger planned expenses, or funds you want to keep flexible.

  • How does a money market account work?

With a money market account, the money you deposit earns dividends based on the account’s rate structure. GICU’s Money Market accounts use tiered dividend rates, which means your earning potential may increase as your balance grows. Unlike a certificate, your funds are not locked in for a set period. You can manage your account through online and mobile banking, giving you convenient access when you need it.

  • Are money market accounts FDIC insured?

Money market accounts at GICU are federally insured, but not by the FDIC. Because GICU is a credit union, eligible deposits are insured through the National Credit Union Administration, or NCUA, rather than the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. This federal insurance helps protect members’ deposits in covered accounts, including qualifying savings and money market accounts held at federally insured credit unions.

  • How do I open a money market account with GICU?

To open a Money Market account with us, you can contact a local GICU branch for help getting started. New members may also need to establish credit union membership with a Primary Share account. Be prepared to provide identification, proof of address, proof of Social Security number or ITIN, and the required opening deposit so GICU can complete the account setup process.

  • What’s the minimum to open a Money Market account at GICU?

The minimum deposit to open our standard Money Market account is $2,500. We also offer an eMoney Market account for members who prefer a digital-focused savings option, which requires a $10,000 minimum balance and enrollment in eStatements. The right option depends on how much you plan to deposit, how you prefer to manage your account, and your savings goals.
